About the Program
In 1999, our council began exploring the purchase of a large Nativity set for display in front of our church during Christmas. With various quotes (all in the thousands of dollars) covering various materials, we decided to look inward for a solution. A couple of Brother Knights stepped forward, purchased a pattern, and built a nativity scene out of wood.
A few more Knights jumped into the fray, and in a few short years we have built several large sets for display around our community. We approached 15 businesses in our community for permission to display a large set on their property at no charge. All agreed and our campaign was under way. With all of the visibility this gave us, we now have over 30 maintenance free PVC sets sold or on display with more requests on order. Church members and passersby inquired about the Sets and asked if they had some residential use. So we purchased a Small Nativity pattern. Over the years we have sold over 500 of sets to displays in front of homes in five different states. Most homes will shine a spotlight onto the set which makes them highly visible at night. As a result, every year we get more and more inquiries to purchase sets. Then in 2005 we developed an exciting new campaign using car magnets in the shape of the Nativity Scene. We did this primarily to combat the commercialization of the "Holiday Season" where stores and communities actively tried to eliminate Christ from Christmas! The original idea was to capitalize on the momentum of the ribbons we all see on cars, and the response was amazing! Although we offer the Nativity Sets as a fundraiser raffle item to other Councils and churches, it is the Nativity Magnet that has become the main focus as a fundraiser and the means to getting the message out:"Keep Christ in Christmas"! Our goal is to keep the price of each magnet we sell at our breakeven cost, to allow other Councils and Churches to use as a fundraiser. This has been very successful since the retail value is $3.00 - $5.00 each. Some Councils have been receiving as much as $10.00 each as a donation. Our main problem last year was being able to fill last minute orders since the production turnaround was one month. So our strategy this year is to get as many orders filled before October 1st and use those funds to purchase Magnets to have on hand for last minute orders and reorders!
